Fights in the movies can be exciting, dynamic, fast and thrilling to watch – but have
you ever wanted to be able to do it for yourself? Ever wanted to know HOW it’s
done? Come along and train on this unique course and gain certification from the UK’s leading provider of stage and screen combat training.

Course Summary
You will gain a basic working knowledge of film fighting techniques. We will
use unarmed combat to explore the requirements and quirks of working in this
medium. Basic set etiquette and performance disciplines will be covered and a
constant emphasis placed on safety and creating reality for the camera.

You will have the opportunity to take the Fight Performance Exam awarded by the British Academy of Stage & Screen Combat (BASSC) and receive a Foundation in Film Fighting: Unarmed certificate at the end of term.

This course will take place at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Ruskin Hall, Bournville and is taught by Roger Bartlett (Equity Fight Director and Master Teacher with the BASSC and graduate of the International Stunt School).

Course dates are:
Monday 21st September – Monday 7th December 2026.
Classes will run from 6.00pm – 9.00pm every week. Regular attendance is essential.

Course Description

Key Facts
This course is about learning the basic techniques and methods involved when fighting for film. A constant emphasis will be placed on how to work in the safest and most controlled manner and there will be the opportunity to take the Foundation in Film Fighting: Unarmed exam at the end of the course.

You will learn how to deliver a punch, how to sell a hit, how to animate the action and play to the camera using the standard western style of unarmed fighting common in films today.
This is a practical course. The class sessions will consist of learning then filming choreography, and giving feedback on filmed fights. An emphasis will be placed on safety and proper set technique.

By the end of this course you should be able to:
• Safely perform a realistic film fight sequence.
• Demonstrate an awareness of safe technique for rehearsing a film fight sequence.
• Demonstrate an awareness of film set etiquette.
• Realise character, emotion and narrative through the use of body and movement.

You will be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

You will need to wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing and training shoes with a good grip. You may also wish to bring a notebook and something to write with.
